Achy knees that didn’t used to ache. Stiff hands in the morning. A hip that just feels “tight” no matter how much you stretch it. If you’re in perimenopause or menopause and your joints feel different lately, you’re not imagining it — and you don’t have to just live with it. Here’s what’s going on, and how ReConnect Health can help.

Why Menopause Causes Joint Pain

Estrogen does more than regulate your cycle, it also helps keep connective tissue, cartilage, and the lining of your joints healthy and well-lubricated. As estrogen drops during perimenopause and menopause, a lot of women notice new or worse joint stiffness, aching, and reduced flexibility, even with no specific injury behind it. It’s a physiological shift, not just “getting older” in some vague sense, and it’s one of the most under-discussed symptoms of this stage of life.

Where It Shows Up Most

    • Hands and fingers — morning stiffness, trouble gripping things
    • Knees — aching on stairs or after sitting a while
    • Hips and lower back — a general tightness or restriction, especially in the lateral hip
    • Shoulders — reduced range of motion, sometimes mistaken for frozen shoulder

What Helps

Menopause-related joint pain tends to respond well to a mix of movement/exercise, manual therapy, and medical guidance where it makes sense. At ReConnect, that might include:

  • An appointment with our gynecologist – to discuss medical management
  • A pelvic floor physiotherapy session – to help with pelvic floor concerns like urinary incontinence, pain with sex, or guided strength and mobility work to support your joints through this transition.
  • Massage therapy to ease stiffness and restriction in the muscles and connective tissue around the joint. This might include general massage, Swedish style massage, cupping, or the more intense RAPID technique (see our blog post here to learn more about RAPID and if it’s right for you).
  • A conversation with your physician about whether further evaluation or hormone-related options make sense for you

Joint pain has plenty of possible causes, and menopause is just one piece of that puzzle. A proper assessment helps rule out anything else going on and points you toward what’ll actually help.
